This was the last painting I did in the series ‘A Hill in Sweden: Paintings of the Northern Landscape. It’s more abstract and has expressionistic brushwork compared to the others. I wanted a looseness and refinement which I think are characteristics of nature in Sweden. There’s no logic to this picture in terms of the weather. Each tree represents a different season. I think of the trees as different notes in a musical sequence that all together create a harmonic song.
