Sea, Sky, Rock: new painting

‘Sea, Sky, Rock’ oil on linen 33 x 24cm (12 x 9in)

This painting ended up a kind of apocalyptic vision with its dramatic green clouds shot through with a small piece of comet. Perhaps it was the comet exploding and landing in a lake in Russia in 2012 that influenced me. I wasn’t aware of that when I painted it though.

The painting wasn’t conceived with any people in it originally. But after looking at it in the studio for a couple of weeks I decided to put a figure in it. He is based on a man I saw crawling over the rocks in Crete like a crab. He’s about to crawl into the water but there’s a bit of apprehension about doing it.
